Dress Like You Mean It

What was the fashion in the day's of Christ?

The Roman toga and the tunic.  Here are some other examples throughout the region and at that time.

Times come and times go.  Some fashions change while some fashions stay the same.  The clothes people wear sometimes depends on cultural acceptance.  The clothes some people wear sometimes depends on what is going on inside them.

I don't recall Christ teaching about a dress code, but He did mention this:

Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!  You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.  In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

- Matthew 23: 27-28

This point is made; the outer appearance doesn't always equate the inner condition.

Later in the letters there is mention of clothing guidelines.  Some take this to heart ( which is good, I say ).  However, some simply 'dress up' for the times they gather together for 'church' while sometimes dressing in a very different way the rest of the week ( missing the point, I say ).  In consideration of others, I think one would think twice about what they wear if they are trying to say or proclaim something.  This consideration should be done not only for 'church' but also for the workplace, when going out to get groceries and wherever else.

If one claims to truly be an ambassador of Christ, when is your time off from being such a representative?  With the example given to the Pharisees, their outerwear didn't mean anything to their heart's condition.  The inverse is true, I believe, regarding how some people dress in 'modern' society.  Somewhere the conscience begins to speak to the heart.  The spiritually minded person adapts to what their heart speaks to them regardless of the latest fashion trends, whether those trends are covering up the body in modesty or exposing / highlighting every curve and feature, leaving nothing to the imagination.

Which trend do you suppose Christ would encourage?
