What's In A Song?
Walking on 7th Street I read "create your own world with
music" in a local music store window.
I think I know what this is like.
I’ve tasted an altered state of mind ( thanks in part to drug use ) when pursuing a career in music.
My musical message parroted what I heard until I found my own voice.
It was a time of learning and growing up.
Popular music steers popular perceptions.
Ethics and morals can be solidified or loosened by popular music.
When the vocal message is used to encourage others and forward goodness, love and other positive attributes, the effort can be a blessing for both the producer and the listener.
It is a powerful gift that can be discovered or a devious skill that can be developed.
A minute before reading this statement I hear "would you be interested in buying this Darth Vader action figure?"
The offer is coming from a homeless veteran who is looking to sell or trade Darth Vader.
He tells me he was evicted from a garage.
I can see all his possessions there at the bus stop.
He mentions how the VA gives him $125 a month but he isn’t asking for anything.
I said since he offered up his life for their cause, the least they could do is help.
He jokingly says he’s never been in danger while in the Navy other than in bar fights with other Navy sailors.
We share a good laugh.
My heart and mind invoke the Holy One for the sake of my new friend after shaking his hand and departing.
Very few songs forward a voice for the future good.
May new songs be sung to love those who are helpless, sad, in need and seeking a place to call home.
